How to apply

Rise Application Process

Step 1
Download the App

Start by downloading our mobile application. You’ll find it in the app store for iOS and Android by searching for
“Hello World – Rise.”

Our app is designed to work all over the planet, so as many people as possible can apply. However, if you are unable to access a mobile device that can download the app, you can contact us to apply through another platform.

Step 2
Set Up a Profile and Introduce Yourself

Deadline: January 29, 2021

The first part of the application is all about getting to know you as an individual—your background, your passions, and your talents.

You will be asked a series of questions that you can respond to with short videos. Upload a selfie or a video from your library—get creative!

Don’t worry about being polished on your first try, as you can submit your response more than once. Others will see this video, so think about what you want them to know about you. You will also be asked to provide feedback on the videos your peers submit.

Along the way, you’ll watch videos from experts around the world teaching lessons on leadership, personal growth, and more.

Step 3
Complete the Rise Challenge

Deadline: April 1, 2021

For the Rise Challenge, you will complete a capstone project to demonstrate your interests, abilities, and drive.

You could create a piece of music, art, performance, or film; develop a new product, software service, or business; build a social or political movement; create a body of research; or anything else.

We want to see what you care about—whatever form it takes! You should plan to spend about 20 to 30 hours working on your capstone project over a two-month period. You will create a project plan, record regular updates on your work, and share your project through the app.

Your project should be ambitious, but this does not mean it must be perfect. We encourage you to start with a prototype, such as a sketch or model, and improve upon it over time.

Step 4
Participate in an Interview

May - July 2021

Up to 500 finalists will advance to the last stage of the application process.

You will have an opportunity to demonstrate your motivations, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills in an innovative interview format.

Nominate a Student

Do you know someone who would be a great candidate for Rise? Whether you’re a teacher, educator, or local leader, we know you have a community of talented people around you—and we want to meet them.

If you would like to nominate an exceptional student between the ages of 15 and 17, fill out the form below. You’ll receive a unique link that you can forward to students with information about the program and application.

Refer a Friend

If you are applying for Rise and have a friend you also think would be a great applicant, you can refer them through the Hello World app for a chance to win a gift worth up to 500 USD.

Here’s how it works:
If you refer someone for Rise and they are selected as a Rise Global Winner, you will receive a gift worth up to 500 USD. If you refer someone who refers someone who wins, you’ll receive a gift worth up to 250 USD. If you refer the referer, you’ll receive a gift worth up to 125 USD.

Here’s an example:
Vik thinks his friend Paloma would be a great candidate for Rise and refers her through the Hello World app. Paloma applies and also refers her friend, Lethabo. Lethabo applies and also refers his friend, Sara. If Sara becomes a Rise Global Winner, then Lethabo would receive a gift worth up to 500 USD, Paloma would receive one worth up to 250 USD, and Vik would receive one worth up to 125 USD.

Here are the details:
Only eligible Rise applicants can participate in this referral process and receive gifts. Gifts are only awarded to applicants who are referred through the Hello World app. In the event that one student receives multiple referrals, the first referral is the one that initiates the gift. Only three levels of gifts are available through this process, equivalent in value of up to 500 USD, 250 USD, and 125 USD. Click here for the full terms of the referral process.
