We at the Rise program respect your concerns about privacy. This Privacy Notice describes the types of personal information we obtain about you in connection with the Rise program, including when you visit the Rise website, use one of our mobile or web apps, or engage with us or the Rise community online or at events (collectively, the “Rise Services”), how we use the information, with whom we may share it, and the choices available to you regarding our use of the information. We also describe the measures we take to safeguard the personal information and how you can contact us about our privacy practices.

We may obtain certain personal information about you as described in this section.

When you apply to the Rise program or interact with the Rise Services, we obtain certain information about you, including:

  • contact information, such as name, email, postal address, and phone number;

  • education details and test or evaluation results, employment history, study interests, skills, aptitudes, awards, achievements and extra-curricular interests;

  • personal statements or essays and writing samples;

  • audio transcripts of interviews and other communications;

  • identification documents, such as passport, driver’s license, or certificate of legal permanent residency;

  • photographs and videos;

  • demographic and socioeconomic data, such as gender, date of birth, birthplace, nationality, residency timeline, language, type of education, and family details (e.g., educational and employment background of your parents/guardians, income and home ownership information, school information);

  • race, ethnicity and religion if we need such information for diversity purposes;

  • health or disability information so we can offer reasonable accommodations;

  • peer comments and reviews;

  • information provided by your references (and information about those individuals, such as their contact information);

  • information about you in your public profiles (e.g., Facebook, Hello World) or other public domain sources (e.g., news media, profiles, publications, and research);

  • engagement and interaction data within our online community spaces (e.g. Discord);

  • information you provide during interviews, tests or assignments;

  • your communication and other preferences related to the Rise Services;

  • records of your communications with us (e.g., emails, letters, and notes of meetings or conversations);

  • evaluations, observations, and inferences we derive from the information we obtain about you

  • additional information you submit as a Rise Finalist (e.g. certificates of achievement, details of or links to prior work and accomplishments); and

  • any other information you provide to us in connection with your application, participation, or nomination, such as through emails, phone or other live conversations, or interactions on Rise’s social media channels.

In connection with our referral process, we obtain contact information about the person referred, such as name and email address. We also maintain information about the source of referrals. We will request additional information from you as necessary to provide you a reward if your referral applies and is selected as a Rise Global Winner. If you nominate someone for membership in our program through our referral process, you are responsible for informing the nominee of such referral.

If you are selected as a Rise Global Winner, we may obtain updated information described above in connection with our ongoing relationship with you. In addition, as a Rise Global Winner, we obtain other information about you, including:

  • information about your academic progress, goals, plans and specialties;

  • career history and professional activities and achievements;

  • login details used to access your online Rise account;

  • details about your participation in community activities, including volunteer work, activism, and donations to special causes or interests;

  • information about research grants, scholarships, and fellowships;

  • relationships with other relevant organizations and initiatives, such as foundations, trusts, and charities;

  • financial assistance or funding information, including financial needs, bank account details and payment history;

  • information we obtain in connection with mentorship and coaching opportunities;

  • feedback you provide (e.g., survey responses);

  • physical and mental health information you provide, including medical conditions, so we can provide reasonable accommodations and support your wellbeing;

  • records of your interactions with Rise, such as attendance at meetings and events, fundraising and volunteer work, and trainings; and

  • any other information you choose to submit to us (e.g., through the Rise Services).

Information We Obtain By Automated Means

When you use the Rise Services, we may obtain certain information by automated means, such as cookies, web server logs, web beacons, bots, and other technologies. A “cookie” is a text file that websites send to a visitor’s computer or other Internet-connected device to uniquely identify the visitor’s browser or to store information or settings in the browser. A “web beacon,” also known as an Internet tag, pixel tag or clear GIF, links web pages to web servers and cookies and may be used to transmit information collected through cookies back to a web server. A “bot” is a software program that performs automated tasks such as tracking usage or activity statistics.

We may use these automated technologies to collect information about your equipment, browsing actions, and usage patterns. The information we obtain in this manner may include your device IP address, identifiers associated with your devices, types of devices connected to the Rise Services, web browser characteristics, device characteristics, language preferences, referring/exit pages, clickstream data, event attendance, engagement on community platforms, and dates and times of visits to the Rise Services. These technologies help us (1) remember your information so you do not have to re-enter it; (2) track and understand how you use and interact with the Rise Services; (3) tailor the Rise Services around your preferences; (4) measure the usability of the Rise Services and the effectiveness of our advertisements, communications, and resources; and (5) otherwise manage and enhance our services, and help ensure they are working properly.

Your browser may tell you how to be notified when you receive certain types of cookies or how to restrict or disable certain types of cookies. Please note, however, that without cookies you may not be able to use all of the features of the Rise Services. For mobile devices, you can manage how your device and browser share certain device data by adjusting the privacy and security settings on your mobile device.

The Rise Services are not designed to respond to “do not track” signals from browsers.

If you use the Rise Services, we will obtain your consent to process your personal information for specified purposes. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at There is no penalty if you withdraw consent, but we will have to cease the relevant processing, which means we may no longer be able to provide the affected services to you.

We may also process your information where:

  • the processing is necessary for the performance of a contract you have entered into with us (such as the Contest Rules, a content license, or an event release), or to take steps at your or your parent/guardian’s request prior to entering into a contract;

  • to comply with our legal obligations (such as complying with tax and OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) obligations or lawful requests for information from a court or government authority);

  • to protect an individual from serious harm (such as through our Safeguarding Policy); or

  • for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by us or someone else, where such interests are not overridden by your interests or fundamental rights and freedoms. Our legitimate interests include operating, managing, evaluating, and improving the Rise Services, facilitating the provision of benefits and opportunities offered through the Rise program, securing our services and protecting against fraud or other misuse, and protecting the safety of the Rise community. In many of these instances, we will obtain your consent, but in some instances it may not be possible or practical to do so and therefore we will rely on legitimate interests as the basis for processing.

We use the personal information we obtain with your consent (unless otherwise noted below in parentheses or disclosed to you outside of this policy) for the following purposes:

  • operate, manage, evaluate, and improve the Rise Services, including managing the Rise program, developing new programs and services, enhancing and improving our programs and services, and managing our communications;

  • analyze our programs and services, including performing data analytics, accounting, auditing and other internal functions (for our legitimate interests of operating, managing, evaluating, and improving the Rise Services, and to comply with our legal obligations);

  • provide you with scholarships, awards, and other funding and support opportunities;

  • manage the relationship we have with you and other Rise participants;

  • establish and manage your Rise account, and identify and authenticate you so you can explore our services and opportunities;

  • personalize your experience with the Rise Services (for our legitimate interests of operating, managing, evaluating, and improving the Rise Services);

  • administer diversity and wellness activities for Rise Winners and support Rise Winners from diverse backgrounds;

  • manage and inform the Rise program selection process;

  • administer scholarships, courses, awards, career support, housing, and funding services we offer to Rise Global Winners;

  • manage our ongoing relationship with Rise Global Winners, alumni and other strategic partners (e.g., teachers and service organizations);

  • track Rise Global Winners’ educational and career progress, achievements, family status, and community engagement;

  • track engagement on Rise’s community platforms (for our legitimate interests of operating, managing, evaluating, and improving the Rise Services and protecting the safety of the Rise community);

  • administer participation in surveys, contests, or other Rise-related programs;

  • promote the Rise Services through targeted advertising on other apps and websites such as social media platforms;

  • manage our referral process, including processing rewards for successful nominations;

  • communicate with you and respond to your inquiries;

  • protect against and prevent fraud, unauthorized transactions, claims and other liabilities (for our legitimate interests and those of third parties);

  • maintain and enhance the safety and security of the Rise Services (for our legitimate interests and those of third parties including other Rise participants); and

  • comply with and enforce applicable legal requirements, industry standards, and our policies and terms.

We also will obtain your consent to send you any communications unrelated to the Rise program (such as news or opportunities from or about our partners).

Where parental consent is required by applicable law to process your personal information, we will seek the consent of your parent or guardian.

We do not solely use automated means to select Rise Global Winnersor make other decisions that may produce legal effect or similarly significantly affect you. All Finalists and Rise Global Winners are selected by a review committee following a combination of evaluations that require human input.

We also may use the information in other ways for which we provide specific notice at the time of collection, and will obtain your consent unless one of the other purposes described above applies (i.e. contract, legal obligation, harm protection, or legitimate interests).

Third-Party Analytics

We use third-party analytics services on the Rise Services, such as Google Analytics, and Facebook and Snapchat measurement and analytics tools to measure the effectiveness of our promotion of the Rise Services on those platforms. The information we obtain through the Rise Services may be disclosed to or collected directly by these services. Interest-Based Advertising

We advertise and promote the Rise Services on third party platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, and Snapchat (“Third-Party Ad Services”). This section of our Privacy Notice provides details about our advertising practices and explains how you can exercise your choices.

We obtain information from Third-Party Ad Services when people visit the Rise Services through an interaction with one of our ads, in order to measure the effectiveness of our marketing efforts. With your consent, we provide information about your interactions with our ads to Third-Party Ad Services to help improve the effectiveness of our ads and help better target our ads to others with similar interests who are likely to be interested in the Rise Services. You can withdraw this consent at any time by contacting us at

Through Third-Party Ad Services, we can tailor our messaging to users considering demographic data, users’ inferred interests and browsing context. These services track their users’ online activities over time and across multiple websites by collecting information through automated means, including through the use of cookies, web server logs, web beacons and other similar technologies. The Third-Party Ad Services use this information to show their users ads that may be tailored to their individual interests. The information Third-Party Ad Services may collect includes data about your visits to websites that serve Rise advertisements, such as the pages or ads you view and the actions you take on the websites. This data collection takes place both on the Rise Services and on third-party websites that participate in these Third-Party Ad Services.

We share the information we obtain about you with our affiliates and subsidiaries who have a need to know, as well as entities that serve as administrators for or partners in our programs, such as the Rhodes Trust and organizations in local countries we are partnering with who may help us review applications. From time to time, we may share aggregated information about Rise program applicants or members with authorized researchers to perform statistical or scientific research and analysis. We also share the information we obtain about you with service providers and other entities to perform certain services on our behalf based on our instructions, such as web and database hosting, Third-Party Ad Services, IT support, and data analytics. Most of our service providers are located in the United States. We do not authorize our service providers to use or disclose the information except as necessary to perform services on our behalf or comply with legal requirements. Please contact us as specified in the “How To Contact Us” section of this Privacy Notice if you would like to obtain more information about the affiliates, subsidiaries and other third parties with whom we may share personal information.

Information or other content you submit through the public-facing areas of the Rise Services will be visible to anyone who visits those areas. Please note that other visitors may view, re-post, screen capture, or record content that is publicly available on the Rise Services.

In addition, we may disclose personal information (1) if we are required to do so by law or legal process (such as a court order or subpoena); (2) in response to requests by government agencies, such as law enforcement authorities; (3) to establish, exercise or defend our legal rights; (4) when we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to prevent physical or other harm or financial loss; (5) in connection with an investigation of suspected or actual illegal activity; or (6) otherwise with your consent or as directed by your representative.

We reserve the right to transfer any personal information we have about you in the event we sell or transfer all or a portion of our business or assets (including in the event of a merger, acquisition, joint venture, reorganization, divestiture, dissolution or liquidation).


We offer you certain choices in connection with the personal information we collect from you. To update your preferences, limit the communications you receive from us, or submit a request, please contact us as indicated in the “How To Contact Us” section of this Privacy Notice. You can unsubscribe from our marketing mailing lists by following the “Unsubscribe” link in our emails or contacting us as specified in the “How To Contact Us” section below. To the extent provided by applicable law, you may (1) have the right to access the personal information we maintain about you; (2) request that we rectify personal information about you that is inaccurate; (3) request that we erase personal information about you; (4) have the right to restrict our processing of your personal information; (5) object at any time to the processing of your personal information on grounds relating to your particular situation and, in any event, to the processing of your personal information for direct marketing purposes; (6) have the right to withdraw your consent to any processing of your personal information that is based on your consent; and (7) in certain circumstances, request that we provide you with a copy of your personal information in a structured, commonly used and machine readable format.

We may transfer the personal information we collect about you to recipients in countries other than the country in which the information originally was collected. Those countries may not have the same data protection laws as the country in which you initially provided the information. When we transfer your information to recipients in other countries, we will protect that information as described in this Privacy Notice and will comply with applicable legal requirements providing adequate protection for the transfer of personal information to recipients in countries other than the one in which you provided the information.

If your personal information is collected from you in the EEA, UK or Switzerland and we subsequently transfer it outside of the EEA, UK or Switzerland to a country that has not been recognized by the European Commission as providing an adequate level of data protection, the safeguards on which we rely to transfer such information include appropriate contractual terms with the recipients. To the extent required by applicable law, we will retain your personal information for the duration of our relationship, plus a reasonable period to comply with the applicable statute of limitation periods and records retention requirements under applicable law.


We maintain administrative, technical and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information against accidental, unlawful or unauthorized destruction, loss, alteration, access, disclosure or use.


The Rise Services are intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under the age of 13.


For your convenience and information, the Rise Services may provide links to other online services, and may include third-party features such as apps, tools, widgets and plug-ins. These online services and third-party features may operate independently from us. The privacy practices of the relevant third parties, including details on the information they may collect about you, is subject to the privacy statements of these parties, which we strongly suggest you review. To the extent any linked online services or third-party features are not owned or controlled by Rise, we are not responsible for these third parties’ information practices.


This Privacy Notice may be updated periodically to provide further clarity and to reflect changes in our personal information practices. We will post a notice on the Rise Services to notify you of significant changes to our Privacy Notice and indicate at the top of the Privacy Notice when it was most recently updated.
