Rise Fellow 2023

María is passionate about sharing her learning with others. She enjoys learning about mathematics, participating in science Olympiads, and has represented Mexico in the Bulgarian International Mathematics Competition (2018), the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (2022), and the Pan American Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (2021-2022). María is also passionate about social justice and art. Leveraging these interests, she co-designed a community project to address discrimination—an initiative that led to her participation in the 2023 Jóvenes en Acción Exchange Program. For her Rise project, María created a free, face-to-face, eco-friendly learning and preparation opportunity for children in her rural community as they prepare to take the high school entrance exam. As a proud descendant of Mayan culture, María is committed to learning and preserving the indigenous language.
